Our story starts with the kids

For the kids who shut down in noisy rooms, kids who were told to “just try harder,” and kids who felt like the world wasn’t built for them, Spectroom Charitable Trust was created in response to all of that.

We didn’t set out to just build a service. We set out to create what we wished already existed —places that were sensory-friendly, places of support without judgement, and care that doesn’t try to fix the child, but changes the environment around them. Because when you shift the space, the child doesn’t have to.

Because care shouldn’t be conditional

Too often, support for autistic children, and children with other disabilities, only shows up if they meet certain criteria. If they behave a certain way, if they don’t “disrupt”, if their needs can be easily accommodated.

Spectroom Charitable Trust exists because we believe care shouldn’t have an asterisk. Children shouldn’t have to earn safety, calm, or understanding. Those things should come standard — especially for those who need them most.

This matters because the cost of unmet needs isn’t invisible. It shows up in shutdowns, isolation, and families left to figure it out alone. We’re here to change that. Not with conditions — with commitment.

Nearly 1 in 4 autistic children in Aotearoa experience suspension at least once — showing the importance of creating learning environments that meets every child’s needs.
